Sublime Systems and Microsoft Sign Binding, Long-Term Purchase Agreement to Transform the Market for Clean Cement

In a groundbreaking move to shape its future supply chain, Microsoft has contracted with Sublime Systems to verifiably reduce construction emissions through a binding purchase of low-carbon cement manufactured using Sublime's revolutionary American-invented technology.

At the heart of this innovative partnership is the need for breakthrough products like Sublime Cement to significantly reduce emissions, both at Microsoft and globally. According to Jeff Leeper, Vice President of Global Datacenter Construction at Microsoft, "We need reimagined products like Sublime Cement at scale to reduce emissions—both at Microsoft and globally."

The agreement outlines that Microsoft will purchase up to 622,500 metric tons of Sublime Cement over a six- to nine-year period. These deliveries will originate from Sublime's first commercial factory in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and its subsequent full-scale production facility. This strategic move is designed to eliminate scale-up risks and accelerate the progression to full megaton-scale Sublime plants.

Sublime's manufacturing process is a 'true-zero' technology that avoids conventional sources of carbon emissions and other pollution. Unlike traditional cement production methods, which require kilns running at 1,450 C to decompose limestone, Sublime's electrochemical method requires lower virgin material feedstock and generates lower carbon dioxide emissions.

"By designing creative transactions like this one with Sublime, we aim to accelerate the mass production and adoption of clean construction materials," explained Jeff Leeper. "This enables innovators to overcome the real, acute challenges of scaling in heavy industries with existing manufacturing capacity."

Sublime Systems CEO and Co-founder Leah Ellis highlighted the significance of this partnership. "This purchase enables Microsoft to access our low-carbon cement technology regardless of where their construction is," she said. "It solves a previously intractable challenge for clean cement scale-up: the lack of long-term cement transactions contrasted with the immediate need for innovators to demonstrate bankable customers to fund their manufacturing."

Microsoft stepping up as the first customer for future megaton-scale plants will enable Sublime Systems to rapidly build and scale Sublime Cement as a global, enduring solution for clean construction. This collaborative effort addresses geographic and supply chain challenges in the cement industry, paving the way for widespread adoption of low-carbon construction materials.
